Gaston Cornil was a French post-impressionist landscape artist and illustrator. He painted lively rural and urban landscapes, often in gouache.
Cornil was born on 15 May 1883. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, under Emile Dameron and Edmond Petitjean. Cornil exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1906 to 1939, becoming its president immediately after the First World War, and receiving a first prize medal in 1931. He appears in the ‘Dictionnaire des Peintres de Montmarte’.
He was also the creator of a series of postcards and advertising posters.
Today, some of his works are held in the Musée de Verdun (Meuse).
The works of Gaston Cornil are quite rare on the open art market, but have very occasionally appeared in public sales in Europe and the USA since the 1960s. The French State have acquired a significant number of his works in this period.

...ion. The painting depicts a scene on a snowy day, on a hillside above a small town. In the foreground a woman, dressed in a long warm clothes and hat, is pushing a wheelbarrow. The barrow is loaded with scraps of firewood, collected from the woodland. In the mid-ground there is a collection of buildings, with snow on their roofs and hints of light in their windows. In the background, in contrast to the pale frost and snow, the sky is alight with the golden glow of sunset. We imagine that the woman will return to her home, light her fire and enjoy the comfort and warmth this will bring.
