18th century
Description

A Mid 18th Century English Walnut Tallboy or Chest on Chest of Glowing Colour.

This double chest of drawers, or tallboy, is veneered in walnut. It stands beautifully on original shaped bracket feet. It has a lovely low waist, which enhances the proportions quite dramatically, and the shaped cornice and chamfered and fluted columns to the corners are signs of a very good maker. It has a configuration of nine drawers all of which are featherbanded and crossbanded, it also has fully veneered sides.

A great piece of George II walnut furniture, made around 1750. Most striking is the outstanding colour and patination.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a tall piece of furniture consisting of two stacked chests of drawers. Originating in the late 17th and 18th centuries, this design offered expanded vertical storage while conserving floor space in English homes.

Georgian walnut chests were constructed with a solid oak or pine carcase faced with figured walnut veneers, often featuring featherbanding or crossbanding. Drawers featured hand-cut dovetail joints, timber linings, and cast brass handles with matching escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-planed backboards, and authentic age-related patination on the timber and brassware. Internal construction reveals hand-cut dovetails and hand-forged iron nails or wooden dowels rather than modern machine fittings.

An antique chest on chest functions as a striking focal point in a main bedroom, dressing room, or wide hallway. Pairing the warm walnut tones with neutral wall finishes and contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the original finish.
