Rare 19th Century Oak Carving Of The Durham Cathedral Sanctuary Knocker
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Robert Parfett Antiques
Rare 19th century carved oak carving of the Durham Cathedral Sanctuary Knocker.
Under medieval English common law, these door knockers supposedly afforded the right of asylum to anybody who touched them. This knocker represents a man being swallowed by the Hellmouth. Presumably, he too has fallen from God’s path. Anyone wishing to claim sanctuary would hold the ring, symbolically pulling the man from the clutches of hell, mirroring the events the claimant was experiencing.
The detail of the carving is extremely fine and the oak has a lovely colour to it. A rare piece.
Excellent condition. Tiny chip out of right ear
