By the known folk pigeon artist J Brown as he specialised in painting Northern pigeon races, in our opinion this is a very fine example of his work.
A nice display size with the frame being 57 cm wide and 52 cm high.
From the beginning of organised pigeon racing, prizes where given for great performances. Now these are frequently photog
...raphed but in the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century it was usual for a portrait painting to be commissioned of the winning racing pigeon. Demand for these trophies peaked in the early part of the 20th century when several specialist pigeon artists were working in this field. Notable amongst them were E.H.Windred in London, Andrew Beer in Bristol and South Wales and J.Brown in Northumberland and Cumberland.
Artist biography J Brown was an artist by trade, but he was also a ''Pigeon Fancier'' and raced his own pigeons. He also had a great passion for painting, he carefully and accurately added the individual bird''s markings and thus created his individual style depicting flat, two dimensional painted depictions of the birds with impeccably observed details of their unique markings. J Brown is a legendary northern British Folk Artist and considered significant for his body of work.
