Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian carriage lamps were functional outdoor lanterns produced during the 19th century to illuminate horse-drawn carriages and coaches. Designed with heavy-duty metals and glass to withstand weather and motion, they were mounted on the exterior sides of vehicles before becoming popular architectural features on period properties.

Standard 19th-century carriage lamps were manufactured using japanned or painted sheet iron, brass trim, copper, and thick bevelled glass panels. The lower shaft housed the candle mechanism or oil reservoir, while the upper tiered chimney allowed heat and smoke to vent safely.

Authentic period carriage lamps feature hand-soldered seams, thick bevelled glass panes, original spring-loaded candle holders or oil burner fittings, and tiered ventilation chimneys. Later reproductions often feature lightweight cast metal alloys, modern electrical components, or stamped synthetic parts.

These lanterns can be converted for mains electrical wiring and mounted as ambient wall sconces in hallways, entryways, or dining spaces. Alternatively, they can be displayed on a mantelpiece or shelf as freestanding decorative accents.

Clean the glass panels using a mild glass cleaner applied with a microfibre cloth to protect metal surrounds. Metal components should be gently dusted, and brass highlights can be cleaned with specialist polish, avoiding harsh chemicals on original paint or oxidised surfaces.
