Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cast iron lion figures became popular decorative items during the nineteenth century, often produced in foundry production runs as doorstops, bookends, or hearth ornaments. Lions symbolised strength and nobility, making them favoured motifs in Victorian interior design.

These pieces were created by pouring molten iron into sand moulds. Once cooled, the rough castings were hand-finished to reduce seams, and a protective layer of black paint, lacquer, or enameling was applied.

Authentic mid-nineteenth-century cast iron displays heavy density, subtle mold seam lines that show manual filing, and age-appropriate paint wear revealing dark metal or minor oxidisation beneath.

A pair of recumbent lions can be positioned as bookends on a library shelf, placed flanking a fireplace hearth, or styled on a console table to lend visual weight and classical proportions to a room.

Maintain painted cast iron by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush. Avoid water and chemical solvents, which can strip historic paint layers or cause corrosion on exposed iron.
