Richard Purcell was born in Dublin and learned his trade as a pupil of John Brooks. Both Brooks and another of his pupils, McArdell, went to work in London and on hearing of their success was followed by Purcell in around 1755. On account of his skills, life could have been good for Purcell, but an extravagant and dissipate life-style reduced him to a state of dependence upon the print sellers; this set of Four Seasons being produced for Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck and John Bowles at the Black Horse in Cornhill. In order to hide his identity from the many he owed money to, Purcell signed much of his work under the alias of Corbutt. To confuse matters further it seems there was a son, also engraving under the name of Corbutt, but of whom nothing is known.
