Here is a rare survival from the mid 16thc....this fine example is known as a ''capstan'' type of candlestick of North European origin...it has a bold slightly tapering socket with heavy ovolo moulding to the upper edge and two large square-cut lateral apertures to the sockets....it has a large cylindrical drip-pan which is slightly raised in the centre, decorated with fine incised ring turning...it stands on an impressive slightly splayed base again with incised ring turn decoration....the candlestick is in very good condition and has not been cleaned, hence the old label marks underneath, which could be removed with some gentle cleaning, but I prefer to leave it as it is....N.
