Antique Collectables 19thc Hand Held Policeman's Rattle Initialled W.T. And Dated 1874. English.

This is a first for me and a very unusual item to find....a fine example of a 19thc dated and initialled policeman''s rattle...these were used before the introduction of the whistle in around 1884 and would have been used to attract the attention of other fellow police officers when assistance was needed....the downside of the rattle, was that it could not be heard as far away as the whistle and also if the rattle was wrestled from the officers grasp, it could be used against him by hitting him with it....this one has the initials of the owner W.T and the date 1874 set into lead discs....the rattle is in very good condition with a fine colour that ''aged'' beech goes.
