This is an impressive salt-glazed stoneware preserve jar stamped ''IC Hoffmann Rassberry Jam''.....I love the way he has spelt Rassberry.... these named jars are rarely seen as they were for domestic use and were often broken up when empty. This fine example dates to about 1840, and was used for home use as well as to export jams and preserves to English colonies abroad, often by sea, so the jars had to be made strong enough to withstand the sometimes rough and long sea journeys...similar named Hoffmann jars have been attributed to a London pottery run by John Wisker in Vauxhall..... this fine example is in very good condition with no restoration and a fine colour...
