This striking mid-19th-century German oil painting depicts the bust-length profile of a dashing gentleman.
Produced around 1840, he’s dressed according to the fashion of the day and wears a black necktie, white shirt with an upstanding collar, and a black coat. His features are pronounced and he carries the air of a resilient industrialist. Note the attention to detail around the deep-set eyes to capture the early mornings and ceaseless endeavour.
Held in a 19th-century gilt frame with a convex profile, scrolling foliate, and leaf/floral corners.
