Louis Sue and Andre Mare were leading designers and decorators of the French Art Deco era. Louis Sue was an architect who travelled with the couturier Paul Poiret to visit the forward-looking Weiner Werkstatte in Vienna, 1910, and subsequently drew up a “manifesto” for creating harmonious interiors with the painter-decorator Andre Mare. As well as designing industrial towns, Sue created the interior of Jean Patou’s home and the perfume and bottles for Patou including the famous “Joy” perfume in 1928. He redesigned Parisian buildings/interiors for Helena Rubinstein and was the architect of the Museum of the Annunication in Saint Tropez.
Andre Mare’s signature motifs were a stylised rose, often in garlands or bouquets, which became an important element in French Art Deco. He collaborated in the design of La Maison Cubiste in 1912. The two business partners established the Compagnie des Arts Francais and other important projects included the Grand Salon of the ocean liner, the Ile-de-France.
