This antique octagonal bowl features a Mother of Pearl with pale staining exterior with an iridescent finish and a gilded butterfly motif. The rim is highlighted with intricate gold scrollwork. Its interior showcases a vibrant orange-gold luster with crimson mottling, complemented by a textured surface and a central butterfly ornament. This exquisite piece exemplifies the lusterware designs of Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881–1945) for Wedgwood. The bowl''s octagonal form reflects precision and symmetry, lending a modern aesthetic to this early 20th-century creation. Printed Wedgwood with Portland Vase mark to base and numbered Z 4832. Daisy Makeig-Jones joined Wedgwood in 1909 and achieved fame for her Lustre pottery line, first introduced in 1914. She pioneered a revolutionary pottery production technique, leading to the creation of both Fairyland and Ordinary Lustre designs. The initial ten Lustre series, numbered Z4823 to Z4832, showcased a variety of intricate patterns and luminous colors. This particular bowl corresponds to pattern Z4832, number 10 in the Lustre range, adorned with richly gilded butterflies inspired by folklore, mythology, and her vivid imagination. Produced between 1914 and 1929, these pieces are now highly collectible. Revival in popularity during the 1960s caused a rise in demand and value, cementing Fairyland and Ordinary Lustre as one of the most sought-after types of Wedgwood porcelain.
