A large and impressive oak chest of panelled construction with three drawers to the base, the top rail carved with the date 1679 along with fern or leaf design which are typical of West moorland. Furniture from this region was resistant to change and dated examples can be found many years apart that show a considerable similarity in style, there is a high quality to the construction as can be seen at the back of this chest where the stiles and munitins have been moulded. The chest retains the original pin hinges, iron drawer handles and escutcheon, there is a later 18th C lock to the top section and an original lock to one drawer. There is some old splitting to the top panels and the whole has a good surface and patina. A fine chest in good original order with no restorations or replacements.
