Rare Large Japanese Cloisonne Enamel 'Dragon' Charger. Circa 1865 - 1870.

Description

Rare and important Japanese cloisonne enamel 'Dragon' charger. Circa 1865 - 1870. *Attributed to Kaji Sataro.

Decorated in deep green, blue, red and pink enamels with two ferocious-looking beasts contesting the sacred pearl of wisdom among stylised clouds, the reverse panels of blossoms and grasses over brocade pattern ground. (unsigned).

Condition: Excellent condition with no enamel losses. Very minor firing loss to the back (as per norm in Japanese early cloisonne work). An early and rare Japanese cloisonne piece of the highest craftsmanship for the era. Museum quality. (Display stand not part of the Sale).

Dimensions: Height = 7cm; Diameter = 40cm

*A strikingly similar dish is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no 326-1872. Also same described and noted in Japanese Cloisonne Enamels by Gregory Irvine: Plate 75 [reputed the V&A museum dish was made by Kaji Sataro, son of Kaji Tsunekichi].

FAQs

Japanese cloisonne, or shippo-yaki, flourished during the mid-to-late 19th century, particularly from the Bakumatsu period into the Meiji era. Craftsmen adapted traditional techniques to produce intricate enamel artworks on copper or bronze bases, which were widely exported to Western markets.

These decorative chargers were typically crafted with a copper or bronze metal base, upon which fine brass or silver wire compartments (cloisons) were affixed. Coloured glass pastes were then inlaid into the compartments, fired in a kiln, and polished down to a smooth surface finish.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often display hand-worked wire structures, minor surface pitting or pinholes in the enamel, and heavier metal bases. Early pieces, particularly from the 1860s and 1870s, frequently feature darker ground colours and opaque enamels compared to later mirror-black or translucent finishes.

A large cloisonne charger can be displayed on a dark wood stand upon a sideboard or mantelpiece to create an engaging focal point. Alternatively, securely wall-mounting the plaque allows its rich colours and metalwork to complement both traditional and modern eclectic decor scheme.
