A set of 4 Cromwellian style, walnut framed, barley twist carver armchairs, dating from the c.18th. This set of chairs features upholstered back pads, covered in needlepoint tapestry covers and matching seats. There are two designs, each on two chairs, and although not identical all are complimentary. The frames including the arms, supports, legs and stretchers are barley twist throughout. Turned wooden knobs on the end of the arms, and the chairs sit on compressed bun feet. Peg jointed construction and solid walnut frames. Dark wax polish finish. No signs of these chairs ever being French polished, and the wax finish appears mostly original.
A very high quality set of rare and handsome chairs. In good condition and very well presented. With attractive patina to the frames and charming aging to the upholstery. Carefully serviced and sensitively cleaned and waxed. Structurally very sound, with no loose joints, and sturdy upholstery. Very much ready to be to be used and admired.
Dimensions:
These armchairs measure approximately 98 cm (38.5'') tall, 56 cm (22'') wide, and 49 cm (19.25'') deep. The seat height is approximately 55 cm (21.625''), seat width between the arms 45.5 cm (18''), and seat depth is 42.25 (16.625'').
Condition:
Please see the pictures for details of the items condition. - These chairs are in a good condition commensurate with their age, and are structurally very sound and sturdy. There are some minor marks, blemishes and wear on the frames. No loose joints. A repair to one of the bottom stretchers on one of the chairs. Some old and extinct worm holes, typical of old walnut furniture, recently treated by way of precaution, but not affecting the chairs structurally in any way. All well wax polished in, not immediately obvious and not affecting the appearance of the chairs in any way. The frames have good colour and wax polish throughout, with very good patina. The feet may all be later replacements. The chairs have been reupholstered
...at some time, likely the c.19th as the needlepoint fabric appears to date from that time. All done in the traditional manner. The fabric covers have wear and fading, but are all in good condition given their age, and are suitable well presented. The upholstery is structurally very sound and pleasantly firm, with no sagging. These chairs have been through the worksop and have been carefully serviced, sensitively cleaned and waxed and are now very much ready to be used. - As with all vintage & antique furniture there will be signs of use, marks, wear & tear, etc.
