Rare Giant Silver Gilt Repeating Carriage Clock

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

Here we have a rather interesting clock made by the Gold & Silversmiths of Regent Street, London with Date letter 'i' for 1924, exactly 100 years old! The clock is unusual in that the size is 'giant', or certainly extra large. Most similar clocks in silver were normally a quarter of the size and non-striking. This fine example has the classic 'C' scroll handle and rectangular case with an 'off white' enamel dial showing Arabic numerals and a fine pair of original blued steel hands. The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths of Regent Street sold many clocks in this style and were all fantastic quality. A truly rare timepiece ! Sold with outer leather case (distressed) and silver plated key.

Sold fully restored with a 24 month guarantee.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A repeating carriage clock features a mechanical movement equipped with an internal chime mechanism that sounds the hour or quarter-hour upon depressing a top button, originally designed to indicate the time in the dark without lighting a lamp.

Traditional silver carriage clocks feature sterling or silver-gilt casings constructed around precision brass spring-driven movements, complemented by white enamel dials, blued steel hands, and protective glass panels.

Authentic examples display silver hallmarks or maker stamps on the casing, a dedicated mechanical repeat plunger on the top plate, precise internal brass gearing, and hand-enamelled dial plates.

Position the clock as a focal decorative accent on a mantelpiece, dark wood console table, or executive desk to create a contrast against contemporary backgrounds.

Maintain the clock in a dry environment and gently wipe the silver exterior with a soft microfibre cloth, taking care to prevent liquid polishes from entering the movement or dial aperture.
