Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.

Made from exotic and highly prized Coromandel, the top is decorated with the most exquisite engraved Mother of Pearl shell and rich iridescent Abalone shell, quite outstanding.
The box opens to reveal a leather writing slope, with gold embossing and the top section fitted with various compartments incorporating a removal pen tray and two original inkwells with screw tops, the inlay is carried from the outside to adorn these compartments, this really is the Rolls Royce of lap desks! One of these compartments has a pressure point which I will label for you so that you know where it is, otherwise it is hard to find. This point when pressed releases the sprung wooden cover hiding the two secret drawers.

Top quality all around, the interior is lined in Satinwood and all of the brass fittings such as hinges are all beautifully chased, only found on top notch cabinetry.
There is plenty of storage for stationery or letters under the top section of the slope.

The box comes complete with a working key. Museum quality in excellent condition measuring 14" wide x 10" deep x 4 1/4" tall at rear while closed.
