This charming mid-19th-century English oil painting depicts a landscape with grazing cattle and a quaint wandering stream.
Here, amid this gentle bucolic setting, the silence is broken only by the lilt of birdsong and the leisurely chewing of cud. It’s nature in a restful mood, when gleaming sunlight is filtered through passing clouds - and rolling hills are ornamented with a patchwork of hedgerows.
The composition and stylisation is somewhat reminiscent of similar views by Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803-1902). Perhaps the artist was a follower.
Held within a gilt frame, which could be original.
