Antique Salt-bag, Shahsevan Nomads, Moghan Region, Azerbaijan.

1900 - 1920
Description

This stunning salt-bag - 'namakdan' in Persian - was made by Shahsevan nomads in the environs of Moghan around 1900. The diagonal bands of purple, ivory, burnt-orange, red, pea-green, turquoise and deep-indigo are all derived from organic dyes with each band containing 'S' symbols and all woven in plain-weave technique. The selvedges, bound in different colours, are original, as is the braided neck tassels, where a wooden pole could be threaded through and the bag carried over the shoulder of the shepherd. The bag would have contained rock-salt which was given to the pack animals during migrations to help in the dehydration process.

The weaver has woven the back in plain-weave, but unlike the colourful face, the colours are all from undyed sheep wool. Note the small red symbols on the back! What could the weaver be suggesting here? I leave it to your imagination!

A truly rare and beautiful example of a utilitarian item long gone.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
