Late 19th-century German School, Portrait Of A Girl With A Red Carnation - Antique Oil Painting

Status: Reserved
Seller: Brave Fine Art
This sensitive late 19th-century German oil painting depicts a young woman wearing a green dress with a delicate white lace collar and red carnation.

Produced around 1894, the sitter’s beautiful outfit is stylised with vertical puffs at the shoulder and ‘leg-o-mutton’ sleeves. It’s an homage to the Renaissance and, in this respect, it’s interesting to compare it with Eleanor of Toledo’s exquisite ensemble from 350 years earlier.

However, it’s also nuanced with peculiarities that are drawn from local folk traditions, possibly those of Southern Germany, with the red carnation a charming addition. Typically, red carnations symbolise enduring, imperishable and everlasting love.

The painting is signed, possibly ‘Weithag H’ or similar.
