Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, silver serving trays and salvers became essential domestic items in grand houses, used for presenting calling cards, tea, and drinks. Manufacturers produced elaborate Rococo-revival styles featuring hand-engraved surfaces and heavy cast borders.

These trays were typically constructed from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) over a base metal alloy. Cast elements such as handles and rims were frequently soldered onto heavy gauge sheet metal prior to engraving.

Authentic pieces feature hallmarking for solid silver or manufacturer electroplate makers marks on the underside. Crispness in the hand-chased foliage, heavy construction weight, and original silver solder points also indicate period authenticity.

An antique silver tray can be positioned on a sideboard top, coffee table, or bar cart to organise decanters, glassware, or candles. Its reflective surface adds texture and warmth to contemporary living spaces.

Clean silver trays using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cotton cloth, avoiding harsh scrubbing on delicate engraving. Regular light dusting and storage in dry conditions help prevent rapid oxidisation and tarnish.
