Very elegant pair of classic English mid 19th century Neo-Pompeian style gilt bronze candlesticks stamped ''E & Co'' with a crown above in a shield for Elkington & Company. Both candlesticks are also stamped with a script ''c'' and a number ''5''. The underside of each candlestick is numbered ''1228''. Inspired by roman originals, after the antique they are well cast and chased. Probably from a large country estate they were originally gilded but have faded and worn to create a beautiful patina that is impossible to replicate. Superb condition.
