Antique Fereghan Rug, West Persia, Circa 1880, 1.99m X 1.23m

19th century
Description

Dating to around 1880, this Fereghan rug has real 'old school' charm. It is finely knotted in hand-spun wool, and the dyes are all derived from natural sources which has resulted in a subtle range of colours. The 'Herati design in the field has been drawn crisply and with good spacing. Note the delightful little spandrels in the corners of the field decorated with flowers and little animals which breaks up the precision of the Herati pattern, but also reminds us that the weaver has a personality.. The lovely terracotta 'turtle' border is typical of Fereghans of this type with repeating palmettes and meandering vines. This is a classic rug with a classic design that would fulfill anyone's expectations of a Persian rug. Clipped low, and in very good condition. There are a couple of very small old repairs, otherwise the pile is in excellent condition. Original selvages intact.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fereghan rugs originate from the Arak region in West Persia, produced predominantly during the nineteenth century. They are noted for fine weaving, intricate all-over Herati or floral patterns, and muted palettes derived from natural dyes.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation. Natural vegetable dyes, including madder root and indigo, create their characteristic rich, enduring colours.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical Persian knots, dense weave structures, and geometric lattice or Herati designs, often displaying natural colour variations known as abrash. The reverse shows clear hand-knotting rather than uniform machine construction.

Positioning the rug on timber or stone flooring helps define a seating arrangement, hallway, or study. The balanced terracotta, ivory, and indigo tones pair well with both modern minimalist furniture and classic dark wood pieces.

Vacuum regularly using suction only to avoid damaging the pile, and rotate the rug periodically to distribute wear evenly. Periodic cleaning should be carried out by a specialist in historical textiles.
