Princess Alice (1843-1878) of the United Kingdom was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. As her mother was the most powerful woman in the world at the time, Princess Alice had an extraordinary life. She is considered the most emotionally sensitive and caring of her siblings and was a practical, intelligent and industrious woman. She married Prince Louis of Hesse, and was a prolific patron of women’s causes. She was a friend and follower of Florence Nightingale and devoted much of her time to the management of field hospitals in the Austro-Prussian War. She founded the Princess Alice Women’s Guild, which as a national institution took over much of the day-to-day running of military hospitals. Sadly, she suffered much personal tragedy in her private life, and was the first of Queen Victoria’s children to die, aged only 35. Some of her seven children went on to play significant roles in world history. She was the great-grandmother of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and hence great-great grandmother to King Charles III.
