Princess Alice (1843-1878) of the United Kingdom was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. As her mother was the most powerful woman in the world at the time, Princess Alice had an extraordinary life. She is considered the most emotionally sensitive and caring of her siblings and was a practical, intelligent and industrious woman. She married Prince Louis of Hesse, and was a prolific patron of women’s causes. She was a friend and follower of Florence Nightingale and devoted much of her time to the management of field hospitals in the Austro-Prussian War. She founded the Princess Alice Women’s Guild, which as a national institution took over much of the day-to-day running of military hospitals. Sadly, she suffered much personal tragedy in her private life, and was the first of Queen Victoria’s children to die, aged only 35. Some of her seven children went on to play significant roles in world history. She was the great-grandmother of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh and hence great-great grandmother to King Charles III.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian watercolours from the mid-19th century often featured sentimental, botanical, or mythological subjects executed with fine detail and soft washes on paper. Aristocratic and royal amateur artists frequently painted intimate family scenes, incorporating symbolic motifs such as cherubs and inscribed dates.

Artists utilised water-based pigments painted onto heavy rag paper or card stock, sometimes combined with bodycolour or gouache for opaque highlights. Works were typically presented in wooden frames with archival matting to protect paper fibres from acidic deterioration.

Specialists examine paper age, watermark signs, brushwork technique, and natural oxidisation or foxing along the margins. Inscriptions, signatures, specific royal or artist monograms, and documented provenance further confirm authentic mid-Victorian origin.

Hang the painting within a curated gallery wall alongside modern line drawings or black-and-white photography to create an eclectic contrast. Alternatively, place it above a hallway console or mantelpiece to serve as a classic focal point.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and mould growth. Ensure the piece is mounted behind UV-filtering glass using acid-free matting materials to maintain original paper integrity.
