Rare Kutani Porcelain Vase with Quails and Lakeside Scene, Japan Meiji Period C. 1890

19th century
Description

Antique Meiji period Kutani porcelain vase with quails and lakeside family scene, raised enamel decoration, Japan c. 1890

A fine antique Japanese Kutani porcelain vase from the Meiji period (late 19th century), richly hand-painted and embellished with gilding and textured enamels. This elegant piece is decorated with two contrasting pictorial scenes: one side features an idyllic image of a group of quail among autumnal flowers, while the other displays a peaceful lakeside family resting beneath trees in a classic Japanese landscape.

Of particular note is the exceptional detail applied to the quails — each feather carefully outlined with fine brushwork and enhanced with raised enamel to create a lifelike texture. The depth of observation and subtle shading gives the birds a strikingly natural presence, reflecting the height of Kutani craftsmanship during the Meiji revival.

The vase is painted in a palette dominated by warm polychrome enamels, soft orange tones, and generous use of gold. The surface is further enriched with intricate patterns and decorative motifs, including applied raised enamel dots and textures that give the piece a remarkable three-dimensional feel. This technique, used by master Kutani decorators of the period, adds visual depth and tactile interest.

Unique zoomorphic handles resembling stylised animal tongues flank the vase, adding to its sculptural presence. The base bears the hand-painted mark ??? (Kutani zo), meaning "Kutani made,"

Historical Background

Kutani ware originated in Kaga Province (modern-day Ishikawa Prefecture) in the mid-17th century and was revived during the Meiji period (1868–1912). The Meiji era marked a flourishing of export ceramics as Japan opened to Western markets, and Kutani porcelain became prized for its vivid colours, narrative scenes, and distinctive enamelling. These late 19th-century examples are highly sought after by collectors for their technical refinement and decorative appeal.
