Description

Fine Japanese Edo (early 19thC) distressed gilt wood Amitabh Buddha statue on an architectural base, a mandorla decorated with cloud motifs is placed behind. The buddha has closed eyes and is making the vitarka mudra gesture with his hands, symbolizing the wisdom and teachings of Buddhism. He’s wearing an elegant flowing monastic robe. Height 45cm, width 14.5cm, depth 9cm.

Good condition for age. Mandorla and base have had some repairs.

Amitabha is a Sanskrit word that means 'Infinite Light' Buddha. (The Amida Buddha is also called Amitayus, which means 'Infinite Life' Buddha in Sanskrit.) Amitabha is the head of the Lotus family. In Vajrayana, Amitabha is the most ancient of the Dhyani Buddhas. He is of red color originating from the red seed syllable hri? and represents the cosmic element of "Sanjana" (name). His vehicle is the peacock.
