Very Rare Porcelain Figurine of a Boy, Crown Derby, 1880

19th century
Description

This rare and antique Derby porcelain figurine depicts a young gentleman dressed in elegant 18th-century attire, embodying the charm of Rococo-inspired decorative art. The delicate facial features and intricate details showcase Derby’s exceptional craftsmanship during this era.

The figurine was produced in limited numbers at the Derby Workhouse on Osmaston Road, Derby, which began operations in 1878. The underside bears the distinctive Derby crown mark, authenticating its origin.

The Derby porcelain factory, established in Derby, England, in the mid-18th century, is renowned for its high-quality soft-paste porcelain. Under William Duesbury's leadership, it gained prominence for producing finely crafted decorative and functional pieces. Derby porcelain is celebrated for its elegant figurines, intricate floral patterns, and vibrant enamel colors highlighted with gold accents. In 1773, the factory received the royal warrant, earning the title "Royal Crown Derby."

During the 19th century, the factory adapted to evolving tastes, creating elaborate Victorian designs. Today, Royal Crown Derby remains a symbol of English porcelain craftsmanship and excellence.
