In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
It is set in a good quality glass fronted ebonised wooden case.

It has its original maker's label on the back for "James Gardner (by appointment to Her Majesty the Queen) 29, late 426, Oxford St. London" .
It is in good condition for its age due to the protection the case has given over the years. The Ermine's fur is full and has a good colour. There is no deterioration around his eyes or mouth and he looks very healthy. The background is clean and tidy with no major signs of deterioration or wear. The wooden case itself has a good aged patina with no major damages and has been lightly cleaned and waxed.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
