Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A giltwood pelmet is an architectural framework placed above a window or bed to conceal curtain fittings and add visual structure to drapery. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these structural headers were crafted with hand-carved motifs such as acanthus leaves and finished with gold leaf gilding.

Traditional pelmets were constructed from carved solid woods such as pine, lime, or oak, often coated with gesso and water-gilded using real gold leaf. Decorative central spans frequently incorporated upholstered fabric, painted canvas, or decorative diaper-work patterns.

Authentic 19th-century giltwood displays hand-carved tool marks, natural surface patination, and gentle rubbing to the gold leaf revealing the underlying red or yellow bole clay. Historical mounting hardware, hand-cut joinery, and minor contraction cracks in the gesso also indicate period construction.

An antique pelmet can be mounted above contemporary linen drapery panels to introduce historical architecture into a modern space. Interior designers also mount these carved elements as decorative wall features above headboards or sideboards.

Giltwood should be cleaned exclusively using a dry, soft-bristled brush to gently lift dust from carved details without abrading the gold surface. Liquid cleaners, water, and chemical polish must be avoided, as moisture causes underlying gesso layers to soften and detach.
