An impressive example of a late 17thc / early 18thc brass cooking Salamander, used in the kitchen to brown or toast cakes and bread....the head of the Salamander was put into the open fire and heated until red hot and then held over the food....it would have also been used to turnover small biscuits and cakes and to remove them from the heat....this one has a finely turned finial in the form of an acorn and is in excellent condition.

English. C1680- C1710.
