Rare Sadler Liverpool Delft Theatrical Tile - Mrs Cibber as Monimia

18th century
Description

A Sadler Liverpool Delft theatrical tile, circa 1770, depicting 'MRS CIBBER in the Character of MONIMIA'.

From a series of 18th century tiles depicting actors and actresses produced in Liverpool by John Sadler (1720-1789). Sadler experimented with transfer-printing on white glazed delftware tiles, transferring images from engraved copper plates to tiles, using enamel colours fixed in low-temperature firing.

Susannah Maria Cibber (1714-1766) was the most celebrated and highest paid actress of her day and the leading lady at Drury Lane Theatre.

See www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susannah_Maria_Cibber

Monimia is a character from the play The Orphan or The Unhappy Marriage, a domestic tragedy written by Thomas Otway in 1680. It proved highly popular and remained a stock piece on the stage until the 19th century.
