An 18th Century Fine Quality Small Portrait Miniature of a Gentleman by Samuel Collins (1735-1768) - Signed and Dated 1764

Description

A well executed small 18th century portrait miniature of a gentleman in a powdered grey wig and wearing a gold trimmed blue coat, by Samuel Collins (1735 - 1768). The miniature is signed 'S. C./1764' in the lower right hand side. The miniature measures 3.5cm x 2.7cm.

Samuel Collins was born in Bristol and was the son of a clergyman. He studied art and by the middle of the 18th century Collins had established himself in a good practice in Bath. Collins also had a practice in Dublin where he remained until his death. He painted miniatures in watercolour and enamel and signed his work with initials - (S.C and the date). His work has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum and the South Kensington Exhibition 1865.

This is a lovely example of his work. (The boxed is for display)
