Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1850s.

The box has a top-notch lock, signed Bramah, London and comes complete with the original taselled Bramah key.
The interior reveals a black leather tray on the top, with various compartments, very useful and versatile, beneath is another fitted leather tray finished in the original blue velvet. There is a brass button between the hinges which when pressed releases the drawer below which is fitted out for your manicure pieces, which of course could used for small pieces of jewellery if preferred. While open, the engraved retailer's plaque is revealed inlaid to the wood " J & W Wood, 74 King St., Manchester".

Inside the lid, the blue velvet covering is sprung and can be removed, it is then revealed that this a travel mirror which can be stood up on a table top for use. This can then be carefully slotted back into place so that it doesn't drop forward when the box is closed. There is large section below which would have been for private papers or letters.
