Charles Frodsham London Timepiece Fusee Skeleton Clock with Epicyclic Gearing

This is a super opportunity to purchase a rare Charles Frodsham of London skeleton with epicyclic gearing. This clock was produced following the collaboration with the renowned Whitlock whereby they reproduced technically ingenious skeleton clocks from the past. This specific English skeleton clock features epicyclic gearing, also referred to as 'sun and planets' gearing. The quality of both the engineering and finish on this clock is exceptional. The base bears a plaque signed 'Charles Frodsham LONDON'.

This clock is a fine reproduction of a design by William Strutt of Derby from the late 1820s, and produced then in small numbers by his friend and similarly gifted engineer, William Wigston. The original production ran to only 20 pieces due to the excessive cost.

The clock features the vary rare epicyclic gearing, also referred to as 'sun and planets' gearing. Esentially, mounted on the central arbor is a large ring with both internal and external teeth. This one wheel gears up the escape wheel, and gears down the hour wheel making it very difficult technically to produce. The C-scroll brass frame is beautifully finished with soft bevelled edges. The pillars secured with large blued screws. The detailing continues to the pendulum bob which is also nicely profiled. Overall the clock has a superb fine quality and elegant appearance. The top of the frame to the rear is signed MADE IN ENGLAND, Whitlock, and there is a further signature below. The clock is rear-wound in true likeness to Strutt's original design.

The open brass dial has silvered Arabic numerals which is a lovely contrast to the fame and there are engraved outer minute dots. The substantial blued black steel hands stand out against the silver numerals. This design of dial was also adopted by Benjamin Parker and John Pace for their C-scroll skeleton clock.

The frame is raised on an oval brass plinth, on a velvet-covered wooden base with stepped brass feet. The clock then has a glazed brass-bordered case.

The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are: 14 1/2 inches / 37 cm wide x 10 1/4 inches / 26 cm deep x 11 1/2 inches / 29 cm high.

CONDITION: The clock is in wonderful condition as can be seen from the photographs just minor marks commensurate with age and very careful use. The clock is happily ticking away.
