Small Georgian Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard

18th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive And Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard, Of Rare Small Proportions, Having Superbly Figured & Crossbanded Top, Over Four Drawers Retaining Original Circular Brass Plate Handles, With Fine Inlaid Decoration To Shaped Frieze, Raised On Elegant Square Tapered Legs Terminating On Original Spade Feet.

This lovely and charming 18th century georgian mahogany sideboard is the perfect size when it comes to being both functional, but also at the same time practical in terms of not overpowering a room with its length or depth like so many georgian sideboards which you will find.

Overall it retains a lovely untouched colour and patina showing that it has been both well used, but also well loved and looked after throughout the many years of its life. Indeed it’s amazing to think that it is very much as fit for purpose today, as it was the day that it was made.

It also boasts some quite exceptional inlaid decoration, enough to really lift the sideboard and give it a classy, sophisticated feel, but not so much that it becomes overpowering. The drawers themselves also have some useful and unusual little removable compartments which is a really nice feature of note.

As with all our items this sideboard has been attended to in our worksops by our highly trained, skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, before being offered for sale, meaning it has received any work required to ensure it is ready to place straight into the home, including a natural wax polish.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian serpentine sideboard is an 18th-century dining room cabinet characterised by a double-curved front profile, crafted from native and imported timbers like mahogany with decorative marquetry or stringing.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers laid over oak or pine carcass wood, incorporating hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass ring handles, and satinwood or boxwood inlays.

Authentic examples display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetails, original brass drop or ring handles, aged interiors, and tapering square legs ending in spade feet.

Position the piece as a focal point in a dining space, hallway, or living area, balancing its warm wood tones against neutral wall paint and pairing it with contemporary artwork or table lamps.

Keep the sideboard away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping or veneer lifting, and dust regularly with a soft cloth while applying beeswax twice yearly to protect the polish.
