Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A barograph is a recording barometer introduced in the late 19th century that continuously plots atmospheric pressure onto a paper chart wrapped around a clockwork-driven cylinder. Pressure changes are registered via a series of evacuated metal capsules that expand and contract, moving an inked pen arm across the revolving paper.

Traditional barographs are constructed using a polished hardwood case, such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, fitted with bevelled glass panels to view the interior mechanism. The internal clockwork drum, pressure-sensing capsule assembly, and dial are made of lacquered brass and steel.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-engraved maker signatures on the dial or movement base, heavy lacquered brass components showing natural age-related oxidisation, and original clockwork mechanisms. The solid wood case will display traditional joinery techniques and a surface patina consistent with its age.

An antique barograph serves as a decorative mechanical object on an office desk, library shelf, or sideboard top. Its exposed brass components and timber case contrast effectively with contemporary minimalist decor as well as industrial or traditional interior schemes.

The wooden case should be kept away from direct heat sources and wiped with a dry lint-free cloth, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to preserve the timber finish. The internal brass movement requires dusting with a soft brush, while the clockwork drum mechanism needs professional cleaning and lubrication to maintain accurate operation.
