A George VI era Art Deco style silver cigarette box with clear hallmarks on box and lid for Birmingham 1944 and makers mark for Marples & Beasley. Although made in the era of World War II, the box has a distinctive Art Deco design with all round engine turned finish and two square corners on the lid with contrasting vertical lines. The clip opener and backing are plain silver as is the oblong cartouche below. The flat protruding feet are also consistent with Deco design. The box is lined with cedar wood. In WWII food was rationed and just about everyone smoked cigarettes to keep the hunger pangs at bay - most homes would have had a box like this - and the design of it was well chosen. It is in very good condition, with some wear consistent with age on the leather base but no splits in the leather.
