This is a scarce Georgian, ''Newcastle'' light baluster ''trick'' wine glass dating from the mid-18th century, c1750. These glasses were originally thought to have been blown in Newcastle, England and then exported to The Netherlands for engraving. Recent excavations have proven them to have originated in The Netherlands even though they are blown in lead glass. This is a trick glass. The formal engraved border of sixteen flower heads just under the rim consists of eight which are pierced through the centre and eight which are not. The glass would be filled with wine, the host drinking normally from the side without the holes. The glass would then be passed to the target guest, holes towards them, with the exhortation to drink it down. The wine would then spill out of the holes onto their clothes to, one supposes, the great amusement to the assembled populace.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 270 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a very wide rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 9.3 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with the aforesaid border under the rim and sits on a light baluster stem consisting of a triple annular knop above a thin plain portion and two small basal knops. The stem leads to a conical foot which measures 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 19 cm (7.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any obvious signs of restoration. The foot is slightly smaller in diameter than the bowl, which is less than usual for a Georgian glass, but is occasionally seen when the bowl diameter is greater than normal; and we can see no evidence of restoration if it has been ground.
English lead glass weighing in at 230 g. (~ 8 oz.).
