Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mule chest is a traditional wooden storage coffer featuring a hinged lid at the top and one or more drawers set into the lower section. Emerging in the late 17th century and widely produced throughout the 18th century, it served as an evolutionary design bridge between the traditional coffer and the chest of drawers.

Georgian mule chests were predominantly constructed from solid oak, walnut, or mahogany, using hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer construction and mortise and tenon joinery for the framed panels. Hardware typically consisted of cast brass swan-neck handles, brass escutcheons, and iron hinges.

Authentic 18th century examples feature hand-planed timbers, slight irregularities in the hand-cut dovetail joints, and original pegged construction rather than modern machine fasteners. Evidence of historical wear, original brass hardware footprint markings, and natural oxidisation on unpolished back and underside panels further verify age.

A mule chest functions effectively in a hallway or landing to provide generous practical storage and a surface for displaying table lamps or ceramics. It can also be positioned at the foot of a bed or along a living room wall to balance contemporary decor with historic wood grain.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Position the chest away from direct heat sources and significant humidity changes to prevent wood movement or splitting.
