Rare Victorian Silver Sugar Caster, By Edgar Finlay And Hugh Taylor, London, 1888

£385    $471    €458
This is a rare and fine Victorian silver sugar caster repousséd with flowers and foliage on a chased textured ground. It presents a pierced detachable cover on a circular foot. The body is of baluster form. The silver was made by Edgar Finlay and Hugh Taylor at the Horace Woodward and Co Ltd in 1888. The firm participated at London, Paris and Melbourne Exhibitions, in 1862, 1867 and 1881 respectively. In 1919 the firm was acquired by Adie Brothers Ltd.

The silver sugar caster presents EF and HT, the Lion passant, the London assay mark, and date letter ‘N’ for 1888. It also presents number ‘1,’ possibly a production number.

Dimensions:

Height: 20.5 cm | Weight: 273 g

Condition:

The sugar caster is in very good condition, with a very small fissure into the silver’s body, but nothing detrimental to its superb aesthetic. Marks are all clear; a little rubbed to the lid but they are still legible. The sugar’s caster shape is very good.
