Museum Quality Carved Circa 1700 Antique Restored Brown Leather Jessie Armchair

18th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this one of a kind, Museum Quality, fully restored hand carved English circa 1700 wing armchair with uniquely carved tribute to Jessie

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

A simply glorious piece, this chair has the best carving in the top I have ever seen bare none, it is literally my life motto since reading it which is as follows "To Rest Is Our Reward, To Work Our Privilege" with a central plaque in copper reading the name Jessie. This work looks to have been done later in the Arts & Crafts era. I can honestly say I love this chair and never want to let it go, the new owners will no doubt enjoy it greatly

The chair has been fully restored as mentioned, the leather upholstery is all new Italian leather hide, it is fully aniline leather which is specially treated and upholstered plain, the hide has then been hand dyed six times, antiqued, sealed, waxed down and polished, the frame has had a light French polish, the seat cushion is also new, its feather filled and has five Thomas Chippendale style floating buttons

This chair is very important and belongs in a museum, it is pure quality and sophistication throughout

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Seventeenth-century armchairs, often associated with the Jacobean and Carolean eras, feature high vertical backs, robust timber framestypically oakand detailed relief carving. Towards the end of the period, upholstered leather and brass nailhead trimming became increasingly popular for added comfort.

These armchairs were constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Upholstery utilised thick hide leather secured with hand-hammered brass studs over natural fillings such as horsehair.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved wood elements, irregular mortise and tenon joints, and historical wear patterns on armrests and stretchers. Original leather upholstery will show natural patination, subtle craquelure, and hand-fitted brass fixings.

A carved high-back armchair serves as an impactful accent piece in a contemporary living space, study, or hallway. Pairing dark leather and timber with neutral walls and modern minimalist decor creates a sophisticated visual contrast.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the leather from drying or fading. Treat the leather periodically with a specialised leather balm and dust the carved wooden frame using a soft brush or lint-free cloth.
