A torchaire stand, or torchere, is a tall, slender piece of furniture historically designed to hold candles, oil lamps, or candelabra to elevate light sources within a room. Over time, these stands evolved into decorative pedestals for displaying sculpture, floral arrangements, and decorative urns.

Traditional giltwood torchaires are constructed from carved timber, typically pine or lime, which is prepared with layers of animal hide glue and chalk gesso. The surface is carved, smooth-sanded, and overlaid with thin sheets of gold leaf before being burnished or distressed.

Authentic period giltwood exhibits visible seam lines where gold leaf sheets overlap, along with natural surface craquelure in the underlying gesso. Older pieces also display age-related wear showing red or grey bole beneath worn gold layer, as well as hand-carved joint construction.
