Description:
This is a fine quality antique English transitional Regency / William IV gilt mirror, with large proportions (5ft High x 4ft 6” wide), decorated with a rope-twist border and moulded acanthus mount gilt frame, designed to sit above a fire place / mantlepiece, circa 1835, in excellent original condition. This large period gilt frame mirror incorporates transitional monarchist designs, with a Regency rope-twist border and William IV acanthus leaf and floral block moulded frame. Therefore, the style of this mirror spans two monarchist periods. The William IV gilt mirror retains its original glass within the large pale-gold wooden gilt frame, designed with an arched top, decorated with a floral pierced pediment. The mirror frame is constructed with floral block mouldings, interspersed by a rope-twist border on a carved acanthus leaf mounted over-hung lintel feet, which terminate on small bun feet. The William IV gilt mirror retains its original mirror and pine backboards, with four metal side-fixing wall plates, to secure the mirror against the wall. The glass mirror itself measures 4ft 4” high by 3ft 6?” wide.

Condition Report:
The wooden gilt frame is in good condition; having been cleaned and the pale-gold finish revived. Nominal old use marks, to the leading edges of the gilt frame, but nothing significant, given the age of the item. This large mantel mirror retains its original glass, with small signs of “foxing” pinpricks and some old use marks; which we think it is perfectly acceptable given its age, and that fact that it is the original glass. “Foxing” is a term used to describe silvering in antique mirrors that has deteriorated and turned misty, or appears to have tarnished in areas. Light “foxing” serves to demonstrate the pleasing character and patina demonstrating its age. This large antique wall mirror is ready to be used.
