Outstanding 18th Century Antique 1760 Thomas Chippendale Wardrobe Linen Press

18th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this outstanding Georgian circa 1760 Flamed Mahogany Wardrobe or Linen press made during the lifetime of the great Thomas Chippendale and after his designs

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

Where to begin, this has to be the finest of its type I have ever seen, the timber patina and craftsmanship is absolutely first class from top to bottom. This is English, made after Chippendale, the sides have gold gilt bronze topped and foot Corinthian pillars, the main body is made from some of the finest cuts of Mahogany I have ever seen, it simply glows in the right light

I could honestly talk for hours about this piece but the best thing to do, is for you to have a good look through all the pictures as they can better convey the wonder than I can articulate in this short description

The piece is railed to the top so it can be used as a wardrobe, there is two good sized glove drawers in the top section over three very large base drawers

Condition wise, we have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, it is the best part of 260+ years old, as such it has developed some patina and character over there years such as various small timber losses, the base cover of one of the pillars is missing, really you have to look hard to find the losses and they are all very small, I can have the piece fully restored by my cabinet maker and French polisher should the new owners wish to make it Gallery perfect, I would estimate the work to cost between £700-£1000, the piece would then be museum perfect, it is however, absolutely sublime as it is which is why I have kept it original

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale linen press is an 18th-century storage cabinet characterized by an upper cupboard section with interior shelves or slides above a lower chest of drawers, designed following the timber construction and ornamental conventions popularized by cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale.

18th-century linen presses were typically crafted using dense Cuban mahogany or flame mahogany veneers for the exterior surfaces, with secondary timber such as pine or oak utilized for the interior drawer linings and backboards.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, original brass hardware with appropriate oxidisation, and timber shrinkage marks consistent with natural age around veneer seams and panel joins.

A mahogany linen press functions as a substantial statement piece in a master bedroom for folded clothing, in a hallway for additional household textiles, or in a dining space converted into a drinks cabinet.

To preserve the original patina, keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight, maintain stable ambient humidity, and nourish the timber using a natural beeswax polish applied along the grain.
