A fabulous antique Victorian brooch from the late 19th Century depicting a slender crescent moon, lined with seed pearls, with a flower branching off from one side and a colourful bee on the other, decorated with seed pearl wings, pink garnet eyes and two natural cabochon opals for the body.
Insect and Crescent motifs became increasingly popular in the late 19th Century as many were left longing to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world after the vast urbanisation of Great Britain. This brought about an abundance of romanticised jewellery, decorated with colourful gemstones to emphasise the beauty and value of nature.
The brooch is crafted in 15ct gold and features Birmingham hallmarks on the back along with a pin, locking catch and a safety chain for added security when worn. It’s very pretty and would look wonderful on a lapel.
