C19th small Howard & Sons settee / sofa; rare 2-seater model stamped with original castors; the slightly shaped twin padded back leading to the gently curved arms (lower than the norm so adding to the comfort). The seat with two generous loose feather cushions. Raised on well turned tapering walnut legs retaining original gilt brass cup castors stamped Howard & Sons London having an unusual diamond registration mark for 1880. With square swept legs to the rear stamped with serial numbers and original stamped castors. Newly reupholstered in H&S monogrammed ticking.
The diamond marks were stamped to authenticate its copyright registration and add to a layer of protection agains fraud. Diamond marks were only in use between 1842 and 1883 and only for pieces registered under the terms of the 1842 Ornamental Designs Act.
