Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Antiquesaddictive

One of possibly only one hundred left in existence. These solid well proportioned chairs were made in the 1800s in the River Irvine valley in Ayrshire. This one is believed to have made by John McMath around the 1860’s or possibly McMath, or by an Innkeeper and Cabinet Maker, Hugh Shields who was trained by McMath. They used American Birch, Ash, Elm and Oak and as tradition follows these chairs were taken by Emigrating Families all over the New World. Use www.darvel-chairs.co.uk as a very good resource for detailed information. The seat stands 40 cm above floor level.
