Antique English Pair Of Large Georgian Ash & Elm Lancashire Spindle Back Country Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Armchairs / Chairs (circa 1830)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Yolanda Gray Antiques
This is a fine quality English Georgian ash & elm pair of kitchen armchairs, with large proportions, incorporating good rush seats, circa 1830 in excellent condition. The harlequin (meaning matched) pair of country kitchen chairs boast large proportions and are constructed in the traditional method, with a solid sturdy frame. The smaller chair is designed with a shaped top rail, decorated with small finials and the larger armchair features shaped “ears”. Each chair back incorporates three rows of elegant turned spindles, interspersed by curved bars, flanked by turned columns; which are secured by lovely bar-shaped arms, raised on substantial quality turned spindles and front legs. The hand-woven rush seats are in excellent condition and provide plenty of support; finished with narrow slats to the seat edges. The chair legs are decorated with bulbous turned stretchers at the front, united by twin side stretchers and rear stretcher, which ensures these traditional kitchen chairs sta...nd firm on the ground. The over-size heavy turned stretcher at the front of the chair is a sign of quality. The design of these 19th century kitchen chairs originated from Lancashire and Cheshire in the North West of England; they were commonly known as a “Lancashire” chairs. They were made for everyday use in kitchens, in country homes around the North West area during the time of the great mills and the Industrial Revolution.
Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the chair frames, but nothing significant considering the age of them. There is an old repair to the top rail of the “ear back” chair; which is solid in joint. This is a harlequin set of chairs, which means the chairs are a matched pair, with varying dimensions. The 19th century chairs boast good quality hand-woven rush seats which are supportive and in excellent condition. The kitchen chairs boast a stunning rich dark colour and original patination; this cannot be re-created by re-polishing or with new chairs. The chairs are heavy in weight, which is a good sign of quality. The chairs are well constructed, solid in joint, sit firm on the ground and are ready to use.
